Ever wondered how black holes can literally tear stars apart or what causes the Sun to erupt and send material into space? Those questions—and more—will be explored during the next Astronomy on Tap program on Monday, August 3, beginning at 7:30 pm at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena.

Hosted by Caltech scientists, the free monthly event combines informal science talks with audience Q&A, guided telescope viewing, and astronomy-themed pub trivia.
The evening’s speaker lineup features Gabriel Muro, Senior Postdoctoral Fellow in Caltech’s Department of Physics, who will present “Black Holes Tearing Apart Stars” at 7:30 pm. Following at 8:30 pm, Xiaoshan Huang, Sherman Fairchild Postdoctoral Fellow in Caltech’s Department of Theoretical Astrophysics, will discuss “What Makes a Solar Eruption Extreme?”
The evening concludes at 9:00 pm with astro-themed pub trivia, complete with answers and prizes.
Attendees will also receive information about the upcoming solar eclipse on August 12.
Astronomy on Tap is part of a global series in which professional astronomers present informal science talks in local gathering places while engaging the public through trivia and conversation. Scientists at Caltech organize the Los Angeles chapter, which meets one Monday each month.
The free events are held on the outdoor patio at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena. Guided stargazing with telescopes is available during intermission periods between the talks.
No reservations are required. Recordings of past events and additional information are available through Caltech’s astronomy outreach programs.
