Smoke from the Sandy Fire in Simi Valley is drifting into foothill communities and parts of the San Gabriel Valley, prompting air quality warnings across portions of Los Angeles County as officials caution residents about worsening conditions.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued an air quality alert due to increased fine particle pollution caused by wildfire smoke. The alert remains in effect until Wednesday at 4:30 pm.
According to AirNow.gov, air quality across much of the region is currently listed as moderate, though conditions are expected to deteriorate in some communities depending on changing wind patterns and fire activity.
Residents in Pasadena reported a strong smell of smoke Tuesday, though officials said there are currently no active fires within the city. Authorities attributed the smoky conditions to multiple wildfires burning throughout Los Angeles County.
Pasadena Health officials warned that wildfire smoke contains fine particles capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and bloodstream, potentially causing asthma attacks, breathing difficulties, reduced lung function and cardiovascular complications. Children, older adults, pregnant individuals and people with heart or lung conditions face the greatest risk.
Authorities advised residents to keep windows and doors closed, use air conditioners or air purifiers that recirculate indoor air and avoid activities that can worsen indoor pollution, including burning candles, using fireplaces or operating gasoline-powered lawn equipment.
Officials also cautioned that harmful smoke particles can build up indoors even when smoke or ash is not visible. Residents who must spend time outdoors were encouraged to wear a well-fitted N95 mask and keep outdoor activity brief.
Pasadena officials recommended avoiding strenuous physical activity during smoky conditions unless indoors in facilities equipped with filtered or recirculated air systems. Those without access to air conditioning were encouraged to seek relief in public places such as libraries or shopping centers.
Pet owners were also urged to keep animals indoors as much as possible. Officials said pets showing signs of respiratory distress, including excessive panting or difficulty breathing, should receive immediate veterinary care.
The South Coast AQMD said smoke conditions will continue to shift through the night and day as winds carry wildfire smoke across the region
