If you have ever uttered the words, “I can make anything work with the right amount of duct tape,” then the San Gabriel Recreation Department has your next challenge ready.
By Melanie Hooks
San Gabriel’s inaugural Cardboard Boat Regatta sets sail on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 4:00 pm on the waves of Smith Park Pool, located at 232 W. Broadway.
Is it really possible to build a boat that floats with a little cardboard, duct tape, and creativity?
Gather a crew of two to three people and find out. Build your own vessel using only cardboard, duct tape, and a dash of ingenuity. (Your practice runs may get a little soggy.) Then comes the ultimate test: race your creation against other teams for awards including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place; Pride of the Regatta; Most Spirited; The Titanic (best sinker); and more.
Teams may be led by a captain ages 10–17 in one division or a captain ages 18 and older in the other. Children who wish to participate with a parent or adult guardian may register in the 18-and-older division.
On-site food trucks will provide plenty of fuel for cheering on the competitors.
To register, visit sangabrielcity.com/register (under Aquatics) or stop by the Community Recreation Center at 250 S. Mission Drive—but don’t wait too long. Registration closes July 31.
Grab a plan, a partner or two, and start taping!
