The San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, one of the jewels of the city of San Gabriel, is finally getting some much needed “TLC”. Specifically, the massive parking lot or the facility is undergoing re-surfacing. The project has an approved budget of $300,000 as part of the 2022-23 Capital Improvement Program.
The Mission Playhouse was built for John Steven McGroarty, a poet, journalist, and Congressman in the early 1900’s, as a home for his famous Mission Play. Construction was completed and the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse dedicated in 1927. In 1945, the Playhouse was purchased by the City of San Gabriel.
The condition of the parking lot had deteriorated over the years with extensive cracking. Calls for repair have been long standing for the beloved San Gabriel landmark. Despite the temporary inconvenience, residents are excited about the upgrades. The parking lot currently has 178 spaces, but in planning for the re-pavement, there was consideration to re-stripe the lot and add additional spaces.
