As part of Black History Month programming, San Gabriel Library will host a special session this Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm, exploring the historic places and spaces where African American families gathered to rest, relax and fully embrace their humanity.
By Melanie Hooks
The adult-focused program will highlight the importance of these safe and welcoming environments, reflecting on their cultural and historical significance. Organizers note that such spaces have long provided opportunities for joy, restoration and community connection, needs that remain just as vital today.
In addition to the historical discussion, modern participants will also have an opportunity to engage in their own act of rest and preparation. Attendees are invited to create a personalized “Black Beaches Bag,” designed to encourage relaxation and self-care.
The event will take place at the San Gabriel library. Attendance is limited, and advance registration is required. Registration remains open.
