San Gabriel residents can help shape a new piece of public art by voting on the design for a community mural that will welcome visitors to Vincent Lugo Park.

      By Melanie Hooks

The mural will be installed near McKinley Elementary School and Vincent Lugo Park as part of the Vincent Lugo Park Pedestrian Bridge and Access Path Project. City officials are asking community members to choose between two mural concepts before a final design is selected.

The artwork was inspired by drawings and ideas submitted by McKinley Elementary School students, along with feedback from parents and other community members.

Residents can vote for one of two proposed designs:

      • Focus on the Joy celebrates the playful spirit of Vincent Lugo Park, featuring familiar attractions such as the iconic snake slide, octopus, and the park’s green spaces.
      • Focus on the Togetherness highlights the families, friendships, and diverse community that make the park a popular gathering place.

Once voting concludes, the City will use community feedback to select the final concept, which will then be painted by a professional artist.

The survey takes about three minutes to complete and will remain open through Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

Residents can view the mural concepts and cast their vote at this link. Additional information about the project is available at the city’s website.
