Tony Ding took the oath of office of Mayor, administered by Mike Eng, former State Assemblymember, on Tuesday evening, March 15, at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. Councilmember John Harrington was also installed as Vice Mayor.
Mayor Ding was first elected to the San Gabriel City Council in November, 2019. Due to COVID-19 he was never able to celebrate his election, and until recently, all Council meetings have been virtual. He was selected as Vice Mayor in 2021, and now Mayor.
A large crowd, state and local dignitaries, and a large contingency of press, came to celebrate and document the installation of Mayor Ding. A successful businessman in San Gabriel, he is well known in the Chinese community for his leadership in local and national organizations. In addition, several State and local dignitaries attended to recognize Mayor Ding for his accomplishments.
“I am really touched by all my friends here tonight,” Mayor Ding said after taking the oath of office. “I don’t have the words to express my thanks for your support now and during my campaign. As I said then, I wanted to serve my community and I still want to do that.”
“Anytime I am doing something wrong, call me and I will try to correct it,” Mayor Ding continued, “but if I do something good, please give encouragement!”
