A new historic inn is scheduled to open in Monrovia on July 4, 2026, following the restoration of two Victorian-era homes dating to 1887.

The Arthur Blair Historic Inn combines the Blair House and the Arthur House, two historic structures that were relocated within Monrovia over the years to avoid demolition. Along with a newly constructed companion building, the property will operate as an 11-suite lodging destination.
According to the owners, the project was undertaken as a historic preservation effort to restore and adapt the buildings for public use. The inn is being described as Monrovia’s first historic bed-and-breakfast.
The Blair House was built in 1887 by Luther Reed Blair, an architect and builder who helped design several of Monrovia’s early structures. Originally constructed as Blair’s family residence, the home retains a number of original architectural features, including stained-glass details and decorative woodwork.
The Arthur House was built the same year by banker John F. Brossart. Shortly after its completion, it was purchased by Bradford Arthur and remained in the Arthur family until 2024, when it was acquired by the current owners. Restoration work preserved original elements including millwork, a cast-iron mantelpiece, and portions of the timber frame.
According to the project owners, both historic homes were recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. The restoration was completed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
A third structure, known as the Companion Building, was constructed as part of the redevelopment to provide additional guest accommodations. The new building was designed to complement the historic homes while expanding the property’s capacity.
The inn will feature 11 guest suites, a swimming pool, outdoor gathering spaces, and a restaurant and bar called Viola’s Bar & Bistro. The restaurant is named in honor of Viola Church, grandmother of late Monrovia historian Steve Baker.
Located near downtown Monrovia, the property is within walking distance of the city’s commercial district and community events, including the weekly Friday street fair.
Owners Joshua Cain and his partners said the restoration prioritized retaining original materials whenever possible while incorporating modern building systems needed to operate the property as a hotel.
Grand Opening Charity Soirée
The Arthur Blair Historic Inn will celebrate the completion of its restoration with a Grand Opening Charity Soirée on Independence Day, July 4, 2026.
The event will feature self-guided tours of the restored property, refreshments, and live chamber music. All profits will benefit the Monrovia Historical Society’s Anderson House in honor of the late Steve Baker and his dedication to preserving Monrovia’s history.
