Jim Michaelian, the longtime President and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, passed away on March 21, 2026, at the age of 83, just weeks before the 2026 race he helped shape into a world-class event.

For more than five decades, Michaelian was a cornerstone of the organization, dedicating 51 years of service that spanned roles from controller to Chief Operating Officer, before assuming leadership as President and CEO in 2001. Under his guidance, the Long Beach Grand Prix flourished, growing in stature, innovation, and global recognition, becoming one of the premier events in motorsports.
A graduate of UCLA with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and an MBA, Michaelian combined analytical precision with a deep passion for racing. That passion extended beyond the executive suite, he was an accomplished competitive sports car racer for over 25 years, bringing firsthand understanding and authenticity to his leadership.
Earlier this year, a transition plan had been announced, with Jim Liaw set to assume the role of President and CEO on July 1, 2026, as part of a new chapter for the organization under Penske Entertainment.
Jim Michaelian’s legacy is etched into the very fabric of the Long Beach Grand Prix. His vision, dedication, and enduring love for the sport leave an indelible mark that will continue to inspire the racing community for generations to come.
