Film buffs, enjoy a free treat of a foreign film at Arcadia’s Public Library on Wednesday, January 21 at 6:00 pm: Oscar-winner Ang Lee’s debut “Pushing Hands” (1991).

      By Melanie Hooks

American audiences might be more familiar with Lee’s Academy-recognized works “Brokeback Mountain,” “Life of Pi,” “Sense and Sensibility,” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” but before all those hits came this gem about a tai chi master set in New York.

“Pushing Hands” is a comedic drama centering around a Chinese tai chi master living in New York, struggling with culture clash. Together with Lee’s more famous “The Wedding Banquet” (1993) and “Eat, Drink, Man, Woman” (1994), “Pushing Hands” completes his “Father Knows Best” trilogy, three films dealing with traditional generations and their more modern children.

“The Wedding Banquet” was recently reimagined with a modern cast by writer/director Andrew Ahn. Grab a friend, bring your dinner, and rediscover the origins of a modern master storyteller.

January’s film is intended for audiences 18+. No registration required. Light snacks are provided.
