Pasadena Unified School District members voted in favor of Resolution 2448 supporting “The Fair and Equitable Housing Charter Amendment”.

School Board members who were most vocal regarding the need for Rent Control were Scott Phelps (District 7), who introduced the resolution, and Michelle Richardson Bailey (District 3).

      Voting “Yes” were:

      • Scott Phelps (District 7),
      • Michelle Richardson Bailey (District 3),
      • Elizabeth Pomeroy (District 5),
      • Patrick Cahalan (District 4).

      Abstaining board members were:

      • Roy Boulghourjian (District 2 and PUSD president),
      • Lawrence Torres (District 6),
      • Kimberly Kenne (District 1).

Supporters of Fair and Equitable Housing who were present included Pasadena Tenants Union, ACLU Pasadena-Foothills Chapter, League of Women Voters of Pasadena Area, Greater Pasadena Affordable Housing Group (GPAHG), L.A. Voice, and DSA. Stories of teachers and families were shared discussing displacement due to rising rental costs.

      What’s at Stake?

      • Pasadena is 58% renter occupied.
      • The average rent for a one-bedroom unit in Pasadena has risen 51.7% in the last 6 years.
      • Tenants are receiving rental increases of $200, $800 and more a month and are at risk of being evicted for no cause.
      • The loss of families, teachers, nurses, and other professionals due to the rental-housing crisis.

Pasadena Tenants Union (PTU) is a grassroots movement founded in November 2016 by tenants and homeowners. They are a membership body of volunteers and have no paid staff. It was born due to the growing pressure on tenants in the City.

Why is the Board of education even voting on a rent control proposal? This seems pretty strange.
