The Pasadena Unified School District has selected Michael Birnbryer‑Lao as its 2026 Teacher of the Year, honoring a longtime educator and musician whose work at Blair Middle and High School has transformed arts education and expanded creative opportunities for students.

      By News Desk

Michael Birnbryer‑Lao, who has taught at Blair since 2008, is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and Azusa Pacific University and an accomplished saxophonist. Over nearly two decades, he has built Blair’s music program into a diverse and dynamic offering that now includes Music Production, Modern Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, and IB Music. Several of these courses were founded by him, opening new pathways for students to explore music both academically and artistically.

His students frequently perform at community events, most recently opening for Ozomatli at the Pasadena Latino Heritage Celebration. He has also helped secure grant funding to support the program’s continued growth. Outside the classroom, Birnbryer‑Lao remains active as a performer and composer.

“I’m very grateful to my Blair community, from administrators to students and parents, I’ve always received so much support and encouragement,” he said. “This honor is extremely motivating moving forward into the second half of my teaching career.”

The announcement comes during Teacher Appreciation Week, a time when schools across the district and nation celebrate the dedication of educators.

“During Teacher Appreciation Week, we’re proud to honor educators who are the heart of our district,” said Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D. “As our Teacher of the Year, Mr. Birnbryer‑Lao reflects how creativity and meaningful connections shape learning across PUSD. We’re grateful for the way he inspires students to grow and find their voice.”

As PUSD’s Teacher of the Year, Birnbryer‑Lao will advance to the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Teacher of the Year program.

He is also one of five PUSD educators recognized this year by the Pasadena Rotary as Teachers of Excellence. The district congratulated all Rotary honorees and expressed appreciation for the educators whose work strengthens and shapes students’ lives every day.
