If you live in Pasadena, chances are you’ve heard about the famous Gamble House. Although it is a well-known architectural landmark in Pasadena, there are many programs that have been created to promote the house that people don’t know about. One of these programs is called the Junior Docent Program, which is what I completed in November.

It was such an amazing experience and something that I know will follow me for years to come. The docent trainers were extremely knowledgeable, and I met so many friends as well.
There were approximately 30 kids who were in different groups. The kids received different knowledge from each instructor and learned different facts. We spent a total of 7 weeks training and writing notecards for each room that we could use to study and prepare for the tours we would give. There is no required script for speaking, so you can make it up as you go. On graduation day we got certificates and did a tour for our immediate family. For the rest of the 2019-2020 school year, the 7th/8th graders in the program will do tours for the third graders of PUSD.

I definitely think that this program was very useful. I gained knowledge about this famous house, and got real life experience with public speaking that I wouldn’t have learned without the Junior Docent Program. Overall, the Junior Docent Program is a very important program at the Gamble House and for students to learn valuable skills such as public speaking. I feel that this experience helps preserve the Gamble House and its legacy.
