Police deal with stolen mail and stolen vehicles.

Dec. 2: Traffic stop leads to arrest of mail thieves

On Monday, December 2, 2024, at approximately 12:48 am, officers from the South Pasadena Police Department conducted a traffic stop at Huntington Drive and Marengo Avenue of a white Chevrolet Tahoe that was not displaying license plates.

During the investigation, officers discovered numerous open rodent glue traps and numerous pieces of stolen mail inside the vehicle. The glue traps are commonly used to “fish” mail out of U.S. Postal Service mailboxes. The license plates were found inside the vehicle and had been removed to avoid being captured on video surveillance or seen by witnesses.

Officers subsequently arrested 27-year-old Mireya Martinez-Marmolejo of Compton, 33-year-old Juan Ortiz of Los Angeles, and a female juvenile. All three were booked at the South Pasadena Police Department on charges of mail theft and possession of burglary tools and released a short time later on citations to appear in court at a later date.

The South Pasadena Police Detective Bureau will assume the investigation and attempt to contact the victims whose mail was recovered.

Nov. 27: Suspect Arrested in possession of two stolen vehicles

On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at approximately 10:20 am, the South Pasadena Police Department Communications Center received an alert from the FLOCK Automated License Plate Reader system regarding a confirmed stolen vehicle. The vehicle, a late-model white Subaru Outback, was reported in the area of Pasadena Avenue and Arroyo Verde.

Officers immediately responded to the area but were unable to locate the vehicle. Approximately ten minutes later, an officer on patrol near Valley View Road and Cambridge Place—on the opposite end of the city—spotted a male subject transferring items from a vehicle matching the Subaru’s description into an older model Ford truck. Upon closer inspection, the officers confirmed that the Subaru was the reported stolen vehicle.

Officers attempted to detain the male subject, who initially refused to comply but eventually followed the officers’ commands and was detained without incident. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old George Roy Young, of Los Angeles, was discovered to be previously on probation for a stolen vehicle offense. Further investigation revealed that the Ford truck being loaded with property was also reported stolen out of Pasadena.

George Roy Young was arrested on two counts of possessing a stolen vehicle and transported to the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles for housing. Both stolen vehicles were recovered and are pending return to their respective owners.

Anyone with additional information about these incidents is urged to call the South Pasadena Police Department at (626) 403-7270. If you would like to provide an anonymous tip, you can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
