      – 11/11/15

      Roary Williams

      after guarding
      the castle walls
      for a thousand years
      a gargoyle takes flight
      against a yellow moon

      flying low and slow
and leaving a trail of sparks
      the wounded dragon
      setting trees on fire
      along the river

Roary Williams says: “Kris Lindbeck came up with the idea of #unknownfairytales on Twitter, and wrote a few that took my mind into another place…the idea was intriguing to me. All our lives we read the same fairy tales, and it never occurred to me that we might write our own. The form only allows for fragments of tales, but I think that it opens the door for mystery and creativity in its brevity”.

      Kathy Uyen Nuguyen

      dreaming of his love
      who had broken his heart
      and stolen his opal eyes
      the man who sleeps
      on a bed of stars

      from her dragon’s breath
      she sweeps pearls
      into the inkwell of dreams
      for a poet longing
      for another full moon

Kathy Uyen Nuguyen lives in Texas, USA, where the weather is always as unpredictable as she is. When it comes to dreams and surrealism, she uses them to write fairy tales and challenge the notion of “happily ever after”.

      Carole Johnston

      there was a curse
      on the ancient finger bones
      whoever dared
to steal them from the cave
      would be murdered by roses

      all night she dreamed
      of crows shape shifting into
      grandmothers
      they sang her lullabies
      caressed her with their wings

Carole Johnston is a poet who constantly tries to write a perfect haiku or tanka and usually fails. She attempts to find the balance between mythology and zen. Many thanks to Kris Lindbeck who began the trend of “Unknown Fairy Tales” on Twitter. They have migrated to FB and on to other venues.
