Washington Park is now brighter, safer, and more energy‑efficient following the completion of a major lighting upgrade.
By News Desk
The project modernized lighting throughout the park’s pathways and sports areas, significantly improving visibility while sharply reducing energy use.
A Park‑Wide Lighting Transformation
City crews removed outdated fixtures and installed 36 new post‑top lights along pedestrian walkways and 24 new area lights serving the tennis courts, basketball courts, and lower ball field.
The upgrades replaced:
- 15‑year‑old 60‑watt LED walkway fixtures with high‑efficiency 63‑watt LEDs, boosting pathway lighting levels by 40%.
- 1,000‑watt metal halide sports‑area fixtures with 300‑watt LED luminaires, improving lighting levels by 20% while cutting energy consumption by roughly 70%.
Safety and Community Benefits
The enhanced lighting strengthens visibility across the park, improving the sense of safety for residents who use the space for evening walks, recreation, and community gatherings. The improvements are especially timely following the recent opening of the Washington Park Community Center, which has increased foot traffic and activity in the area.
Investment in a Community Hub
The project was funded through the General Fund and the Residential Impact Fee, reflecting the city’s commitment to maintaining Washington Park as a vibrant neighborhood resource.
With the lighting upgrade complete, Washington Park is better equipped to serve the community, day and night, with safer pathways, brighter sports facilities, and a more welcoming environment for all.
