Neighbors and friends are invited to join Villagers for a ribbon cutting to celebrate Pasadena Village’s new Little Free Library on Tuesday, July 9, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm.

      By News Desk

Pasadena Village is member-driven, meaning all programming is planned and facilitated by Villagers in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. This free library is an extension of the Villagers’ strong interest in literature and literacy. The free library is located at Pasadena Village’s office at 236 W Mountain St, #104, Pasadena, CA 91103. Stay after the ribbon cutting on July 9 for a talk from one of the Villagers, Suzie Hoge, on little free libraries.

This little free library is a collaboration between Pasadena Village and the Flintridge Center. Their Apprenticeship Preparation Program participants created and installed the little library. Pasadena Village’s Educational Programs Team and Villager Susan Carr invited Executive Director Josh McCurry from Flintridge Center to present about their programs several months ago. Several gathered to learn more about how the Flintridge Center supports the formerly incarcerated and interrupts the cycles of poverty and incarceration. Villagers were excited to hear that free libraries were available, and Villager Jim Hendrick worked with representatives from Flintridge to have one installed in front of Pasadena Village’s office.

Many villagers volunteer with local students through Reading Partners, Pasadena Educational Foundation, and Families Forward. They connect through book and discussion groups, including the Wise Aging Book Club, the Thursday Book Club, the Cultural Exploration Group, and the new Poetry Gathering. Several Villagers are authors, including Bonnie Armstrong, who spoke about her recently published memoirs during Mental Health Awareness Month in May. The Cultural Activities Team arranges author talks and outings, including a recent visit to Octavia’s Bookshelf, and an upcoming tour of downtown Los Angeles’ Public Library. To learn more about the robust calendar of offerings, visit this website. To register for the July 9 ribbon cutting, visit this website.

      Book Donations Welcome

Pasadena Village invites you to add to the free library. You can help stock the free library, or contribute books to their growing lending library of books related to aging. Books on aging are available to check out from the Village Office during business hours Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm; Fridays, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. The free library is always open.
