Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent Brian McDonald, Ed.D., has named Sergio Canal, Ed.D., as the district’s Chief Human Resources Officer, pending Board of Education approval.

Dr. Canal is an accomplished educator and leader with more than 25 years of experience in K-12 education. As Chief Human Resources Officer, Dr. Canal will be part of the Superintendent’s Executive Leadership Team and will be responsible for leading the District’s Human Resources Division and its activities in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of employees, along with compensation, employee performance and accountability, salary administration, and labor relations.
“Dr. Canal brings extensive experience building structures and systems that center on what school employees need to ensure that students are prepared for success,” said Superintendent McDonald. “His focus on building trusting relationships with labor partners and school and district leaders will help propel the District to the next level.”
Dr. Canal joins PUSD from the Upland Unified School District, where he has served as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the past four years. In this role, he navigated the impact of COVID and led the successful development of an agreement with labor partners that enabled the district to be one of the first in the county to reopen schools for in-person instruction.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead in this capacity,” said Dr. Canal. “I look forward to working with everyone in our learning community to build on the great things happening at Pasadena Unified and increase our student’s educational experience and outcomes.”
Dr. Canal was a bilingual instructional assistant, teacher, assistant principal, and school principal. At the district level, he has worked as Director, Administrative Director, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. As Administrative Director of Human Resources, with the Walnut Valley Unified School District, he established systems and protocols to assist with recruiting, employee retention, and internal protocols to ensure hiring efficiency. As Director of Secondary Education and Pupil Personnel Services, Dr. Canal led professional development for certificated, classified, and management staff.
Dr. Canal has an Ed.D. degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from California State University, Los Angeles.
His appointment is effective May 1, 2023, pending approval by the Board of Education.
