Pasadena Unified Marks Milestone in Recovery As Schools Reopen After Eaton Fire

On Thursday, January 23, over 3,400 PUSD students returned to their campuses in the first phase of reopening, marking a significant milestone in the recovery from the devastating Eaton Fire. The sight of excited students reconnecting with their friends and teachers highlighted the strength and resilience of the community.

The district is prioritizing the well-being of its students during this transition, implementing a multi-tiered system of social-emotional support, including mental health services and additional counselors on campuses. These efforts aim to help students process the trauma caused by the fire and ensure they receive the care they need to adjust. In a further boost to the recovery efforts, Governor Gavin Newsom and state leaders visited Willard Elementary on Thursday to announce a proposal aimed at increasing funding for recovery, prevention, and the reopening of schools affected by the fires. This proposal brings hope to the communities of Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre, providing essential support as the district continues its journey toward healing and rebuilding.

The announcement of state funding is an important step forward as the community rallies together to restore normalcy. Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco expressed her gratitude, acknowledging the resilience shown by the students, staff, and families throughout the crisis. “The speed of this recovery is critical. The sooner we return to a sense of routine, the sooner we can begin to heal together,” she said in a statement.

The next important step

As part of the phased reopening plan, all students are expected to return to school by January 30, if not earlier. This marks the next important step in the district’s efforts to restore education and support for its students.
