The annual Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts fundraiser has returned, inviting visitors to step inside one of the region’s most striking historic residences while supporting local arts organizations. Running Tuesdays through Sundays from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm (until 6:00 pm on Fridays) through May 17, this year’s showcase highlights a remarkable property in Arcadia.

      By Melanie Hooks

The featured home, the Baldwin Oaks Estate, dates back to 1907 and stands as a stunning example of shingle-style architecture from the American Arts and Crafts movement. Once owned by Clara Baldwin Stocker, the estate reflects both architectural elegance and the opulent lifestyle of its original resident. She was the daughter of Elias “Lucky” Baldwin, a key figure in shaping the development of Arcadia and surrounding areas.

Visitors approaching the estate are greeted by a tree-lined circular driveway that sets a tone of understated grandeur. The home’s cedar shingles, intricate stonework, and layered gables highlight its historic craftsmanship, while expansive wraparound porches evoke an era centered on social gatherings and storytelling.

Inside, the residence offers a vivid glimpse into early 20th-century luxury. A grand oak staircase anchors the foyer, leading into rooms adorned with hand-finished wood paneling and exposed beams. Guests can explore a sweeping living room once used for lavish entertaining, along with a library, family room, dining room, and preserved service spaces including the kitchen and pantry, each reflecting Clara Baldwin Stocker’s taste for both comfort and extravagance.

Beyond its architectural appeal, the showcase continues its mission of supporting the arts. Proceeds benefit organizations such as the Pasadena Philharmonic, along with funding scholarships, grants, and educational programs that nurture musical talent and performance.

Tickets range from $38 to $75 depending on the day and duration of the visit, with availability online. The event offers a rare opportunity for the public to experience a historic estate that typically remains behind closed doors, an immersive journey into California’s past, paired with a meaningful investment in its cultural future.
