Three high school seniors from the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) have been named National Merit Scholarship finalists.

Three Pasadena students, Teresa Carbone and Elias Gee from Pasadena High School; and Ian Timberg, Marshall Fundamental Secondary School, are in the running for the $2500 National Merit awards.
“Congratulations to these three seniors!” said Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D.
“They exemplify our district’s vision for graduates: innovative thinkers and communicators prepared to become the leaders of tomorrow.”
High school students enter the program by taking the PSAT which serves as the initial screen. Scholarship winners for the National Merit and college-sponsored and corporate scholarships will be announced in the coming months.

Elias Gee – Pasadena High School (PHS)
Elias Gee plans to study mathematics at UC Santa Barbara’s College of Creative Studies and eventually hopes to earn a PhD. Enrolled in the Math Academy at PHS, Elias is currently working on a research project on cluster algebras with the goal of publishing new results. A varsity tennis player, Elias is also treasurer of the PHS Robotics Club, member/ peer tutor in the National Honor Society, and president of the Math Club. Elias says his Math Academy teachers “have been key to developing my passion for math. Their courses as part of the Math Academy have really pushed me to become a better student.”

Teresa Carbone – Pasadena High School (PHS)
Teresa Carbone plans to attend a four-year university. She has studied dance – everything from ballet to tap to hip-hop in her high school dance classes. Teresa says she is grateful for PHS Dance Director Hillary Temple, her teachers in AP European History, AP English Language, Ethnic Studies, and many other educators at PHS who helped her “engage with the topics their classes covered on a deeper level… A good teacher can make any subject your best class.”

Ian Timberg (Photo – PUSD)
Ian Timberg – Marshall Fundamental Secondary School
A Marshall Eagle since 6th grade, Ian Timberg is heading to Pomona College in Claremont after graduation from high school. Ian has participated in almost every drama production at Marshall: Matilda, Almost, Maine, and Into the Woods, the All-Star 2023 PUSD production presented in collaboration with the Pasadena Playhouse. Ian has been an active member of the National Honor Society, a defense lawyer in Mock Trial, and an AP Capstone Scholar Researcher. Ian’s major is currently undecided but he has a strong interest in anthropology, history, environmental science, and theater.
