The exhibit is part of the Library’s ongoing efforts to engage the community during the Central Library Retrofit and Renovations Project. In preparation for construction, library staff invited anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Pasadena or within the Pasadena Unified School District to submit original artwork to help enliven the site.
The response was overwhelming, with submissions from local artists as young as two years old. Using a variety of mediums, including pencil, crayon, watercolor, acrylic, and oil, artists created works inspired by books, libraries, literature, and their own imaginations.
“I am grateful to the many artists of all ages who collaborated on this collective art project,” said Library Director Tim McDonald. “Their work represents a great city and our shared values of learning, diversity and inclusiveness embodied by Pasadena’s beautiful Central Library.”
To preserve the original pieces, each work was scanned and printed on weatherproof coroplast material for public display. The originals will be carefully stored and are slated to become the first official exhibit in the new gallery space once the Central Library reopens.
Library officials encourage the public to stop by and enjoy the artwork, which serves as a vibrant reflection of Pasadena’s creative spirit. As one library staffer put it, “It will put a smile on your face.”
