Here’s What’s Happening for Pasadena Pride Month

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots and to honor work to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans.

In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution. The City of Pasadena is celebrating Pride throughout June with a variety of virtual programs and workshops for teens and adults as well as free take-and-make creative crafts and events for all ages.

Community Events

• Workshops – Pride @ Work(shop)
  Presented by Te Jay McGrath and the Pasadena Public Health Department. These interactive workshops highlight local organizations and services, and provide context and content for implementing affirming practices for LGBTQ+ constituents and co-workers. Learn about gender spectrum, the coming out process, allyship and affirmation, creating safe spaces, and more! Limited to 25 attendees per event.

• Book Talk – Don’t You Dare: Uncovering Lost Love by Gayla Turner
  This compelling story weaves together a current-day journey of discovery and a true-life love story between two women that took place over 100 years ago.

• Workshop – Bold Voices, Authentic Choices: Writing Workshop for Teens

  Join us as we champion our diverse LGBTQ+ community at the City of Pasadena’s inaugural Pride Month Celebration. Enjoy live entertainment, local food trucks, arts & crafts, face painting and more at this fun, free event.

Take & Make Crafts

Enjoy fun, free take-and-make-crafts that are simple and easy to make. Limited to one kit per participant. Kits, available at Pasadena Branch Libraries while supplies las, will contain the necessary craft materials and instructions. Additional household items such as scissors, a stapler, glue or tape may be needed.

• Rainbow Melted Crayon Art
  Inspired by the book Red: A Crayon’s Story by Michael Hall, create rainbow artwork using canvas and crayons to celebrate identity, self-acceptance and Pride Month. For ages 10+. Sign up for your kit while supplies last. Sign-ups begin June 1. Kits can be picked up at Hastings Branch Library, 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd.
• Rainbow Pride Bracelet
  Express your pride with a colorful woven friendship bracelet – to wear or give! Sign up for your kit while supplies last. Sign-ups begin June 1. Kits can be picked up at Hill Avenue Branch Library, 55 S. Hill Ave. beginning June 6.
• Pride Month Rainbow Weaving
  Celebrate your pride with rainbow weaving. Materials include a cardboard loom and rainbow colored yarn. Perfect for creating a rainbow or weaving a unique colorful pattern. For ages 5+. Sign up for your kit while supplies last. Sign-ups begin on June 21. Kits can be picked up at the Santa Catalina Branch Library, 999 E. Washington Blvd.
