The Pasadena Police Department will conduct an enforcement operation Friday, Aug. 14, focused on drivers suspected of violating California’s hands-free cell phone law.

Under current law, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or other electronic communications device while operating a vehicle. The law covers activities including talking, texting and using apps.
Using a handheld cell phone while driving is punishable by a fine. A second violation within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense will result in a point being added to the driver’s record.
“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” Lieutenant Mathew Campeau said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”
Police advise drivers who need to make an important phone call or program directions to pull over in a safe parking spot. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones before driving or place them somewhere they cannot reach.
Funding for the enforcement program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
