As federal immigration activities unfold in the area, many residents have voiced worries over their safety and the potential impact on the local immigrant community. Chief Harris acknowledged these fears, stressing that the department’s primary focus remains public safety and service to all residents, regardless of their immigration status.
“I recognize the fear and anxiety that this can cause within our community,” said Harris in his statement. “I want to reassure you that the men and women of my department are here to respond to all calls for service regardless of immigration status.”
Harris further clarified that neither the City of Pasadena nor its Police Department will cooperate with federal immigration operations. In fact, he made it clear that the role of local law enforcement is focused solely on maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of the public.
“As previously stated, neither the City of Pasadena nor its Police Department will assist with or participate in federal immigration operations,” Harris said. “Our assistance is aimed at protecting all people, residents and visitors, those who are peacefully protesting, and those who are enforcing our laws, from unlawful acts and violence.”
The statement comes amid increasing calls from the community for clarity on how local law enforcement would handle federal operations in the city. Many residents, particularly in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods, expressed concerns about potential racial profiling and aggressive enforcement tactics by federal authorities.
As part of his message, Chief Harris urged the community to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions. “My plea to our Pasadena community is to refrain from engaging in any physical activity that could jeopardize safety and/or escalate tensions. Our goal is to keep the peace, maintain order, and ensure the safety of all involved,” he said.
In addition to addressing immediate concerns, Harris emphasized the importance of collaboration and trust-building between law enforcement and the diverse communities in Pasadena. “During these trying times, I will continue to collaborate with our city leaders, our community partners, and our partner agencies to foster trust and respect between law enforcement and the diverse community we serve,” he said.
Harris’ message comes at a time when cities across the country are grappling with how to balance public safety with the rights of immigrant communities.
