On Thursday, Jan 11, 2024, a new mural will be unveiled across from the PCC campus.

      By Briony James

A mural was painted over the course of several weeks by Greetings Tour local muralist Victor Ving and was donated to the City of Pasadena, as Greetings Tours investigated locations for a large scale Greetings from Pasadena mural to be completed in 2024.

Painted in a vibrant Art Deco style, the mural is located on the corner of Marion Street and Colorado Blvd., on the stretch of historic Rte. 66 directly across from PCC, on the side wall of local eatery Bubble Puff and Tea. Ving worked on the piece for two weeks to the delight of locals, while the bleachers for the iconic Rose Parade were being erected. Capturing the crowning charm of Pasadena’s City Hall dome, the colors reflect our vibrant sunset skies, the historic fruit-growing history of the area, and the squawking flocks of beautiful green parrots that fly overhead each evening.

The mural is a project by Greetings Tour, a nationwide organization dedicated to creating iconic and meaningful murals, and supported by funding from the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, Fine Arts Club of Pasadena, Visit Pasadena and supported by Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

Artist Victor Ving was given creative freedom to wrap his work in everything that makes our city special, including his own heritage. He says, “The juxtaposition of vibrant oranges in the foreground pays tribute to the region’s historical citrus groves, which played a pivotal role in shaping the city we recognize today. Beyond their historical, significance, the oranges carry a dual meaning, symbolizing good luck and prosperity in Chinese culture. As both the property owner, business proprietors, and myself share Chinese heritage, incorporating this symbolism felt like a relevant and meaningful tribute to this particular location.”

By styling the mural like a vintage postcard, Ving has captured the warmth and history of the city. His work is sure to be valued by all onlookers.

The public is invited to attend the official ribbon cutting on January 11. Attendees will be able to enter a free raffle to win a custom framed and signed 18×24 giclee archival print of the artwork.
