Firefighters, city officials, and community members gathered at Pasadena Fire Department Station 38 to commemorate International Firefighters Day, honoring the bravery and dedication of those who serve on the front lines while drawing attention to the lasting health risks associated with the profession.

The event blended tribute with urgency, as speakers underscored a sobering reality: the most significant dangers firefighters face are often not the flames themselves, but the toxic exposures that linger long after a fire is extinguished. These exposures, they said, can have serious long-term physical and emotional consequences.
Through personal accounts, including those shared by firefighter Jason Morales, attendees heard firsthand about the toll the job can take beyond the fireground. Pasadena Fire Captain David Marquez and Edgar Gonzalez, a founding board member of Protect Frontline Alliance, also addressed the crowd, emphasizing the need for broader recognition and sustained support for firefighters coping with these challenges.
A recurring theme throughout the event was the disparity between preparedness and recovery. While fire departments invest heavily in training and equipment to respond to emergencies, speakers noted that comparatively little attention is paid to firefighters’ long-term health and rehabilitation. This imbalance, they warned, has implications not only for individual firefighters but also for public health, workforce readiness, and overall community resilience.
The gathering also marked the official launch of Protect Frontline Alliance, a new initiative aimed at improving outcomes for firefighters and first responders. The alliance seeks to unite fire service leaders, medical professionals, researchers, policymakers, and community stakeholders to advance research, inform policy, and expand access to evidence-based care focused on recovery and resilience.
Participants were encouraged to take action by signing an open letter, supporting advocacy efforts, and fostering continued collaboration across sectors nationwide.
In a show of support, Shaun Noorian, CEO of Empower Pharmacy, along with IVIM Health, announced initial funding contributions of $10,000 and $5,000, respectively, to provide chemical detox saunas designed to help firefighters recover from toxic exposure.
Organizers said the event served not only as a moment of recognition, but as a catalyst for sustained dialogue and action to better protect those who risk their lives in service to others.
