Pasadena City Hall’s courtyard came alive on Thursday, April 30, as the Pasadena Educational Foundation, community leaders, and supporters of public education gathered for Celebrating Our Schools: Discover 2026, an evening dedicated to uplifting the students and educators of the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD).

      By Rena Kurlander

The event showcased the collective efforts that help students pursue their hopes, ambitions, and future pathways.

      Honoring Dawn and Jim O’Keeffe

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Dawn and Jim O’Keeffe, longtime advocates and volunteers whose contributions have significantly shaped public education in Pasadena. The O’Keeffes, both filmmakers, produced Go Public: A Day in the Life of an American School District, a documentary capturing the daily experiences of students and educators while underscoring the essential role of public schools in communities. Their ongoing storytelling, advocacy, and service have elevated awareness and strengthened support for PUSD.

      Student Talent on Display

Guests explored an Interactive Student Showcase featuring hands-on exhibits and presentations from schools across the district. Students demonstrated creativity, innovation, and academic achievement through a wide range of displays.

One standout exhibit, Reimagine the 710, invited attendees to explore student-designed visions for Pasadena’s future. Another highlight, Inside KLRN, offered a behind-the-scenes look at how the district’s media team brings PUSD stories to the broader community. These and other student-led projects underscored the district’s commitment to empowering young voices.

Performances That Lit Up the Courtyard

The evening featured dynamic performances celebrating the district’s artistic excellence. The Pasadena High School Orchestra delivered a stirring musical set, Field Elementary’s Lion Dance troupe energized the crowd with cultural vibrancy, and the PUSD All-Star Band—set to perform in the 2027 Rose Parade—offered a preview of its growing acclaim.

      A Community Gathering

Attendees enjoyed light bites, refreshments, and time to connect in the picturesque City Hall courtyard. The atmosphere blended celebration with community pride, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening public education.

Celebrating Our Schools: Discover 2026 concluded with gratitude for the guests, sponsors, and supporters who continue to champion Pasadena’s public schools. The evening stood as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the bright future being shaped by PUSD students and educators.
