Pasadena High School will finish this year’s football season as a junior varsity team after a series of offseason transfers left the varsity program with a younger, less experienced roster.

      By News Desk

The team began the season with 46 varsity players. However, 10 potential starters transferred to schools outside the district during the offseason, affecting the team’s overall skill and experience.

After evaluating the remaining players, school officials determined that the student-athletes deserved an opportunity to compete. Following the first three games, discussions with coaches and consideration of the players’ overall experience, the school decided to move the program to the junior varsity level.

The change is intended to support player development while providing students with a positive and enjoyable athletic experience. Although only two injuries had been reported this season, school officials said they were taking a cautious approach moving forward.

“We recognize that this decision is difficult for seniors,” the school said in its announcement.

The California Interscholastic Federation has given seniors a one-time option to remain on Pasadena High School’s JV team or work with Principal Eric Barba and district staff to pursue a transfer to another school where they could play varsity football.

Pasadena’s first JV game is scheduled to take place at home against Burroughs High School on either Sept. 24 or 25. The school is encouraging the community to attend and support the players.

The decision also means the annual Turkey Tussle will not be held at Rose Bowl Stadium in its traditional varsity format. School principals are discussing possible alternatives for a junior varsity matchup, while the school explores ways to help seniors have a meaningful football season.

Pasadena High School expressed appreciation for the players’ hard work, commitment and enthusiasm, as well as for the continued support of the city of Pasadena and Rose Bowl Stadium.

The school said it remains committed to providing athletic programs that help students grow as scholars, athletes and teammates.
