The Pasadena Fire Department is expanding its emergency medical capabilities through a new Whole-Blood Program and a medication exchange partnership with Huntington Health and Huntington Hospital Pharmacy.

The medication exchange allows the department to replace EMS medications nearing their expiration dates with supplies that have longer expiration dates. The medications transferred to Huntington Hospital Pharmacy can then be dispensed before they expire.
The arrangement is intended to reduce waste and lower the cost of replacing medications used by Pasadena paramedics. Huntington Hospital Pharmacy also provides the department with a source for controlled substances and other EMS medications that can be difficult to obtain.
Department officials said the savings could help fund emergency medical equipment, technology upgrades and other resources for firefighters and paramedics.
“This partnership allows us to make better use of public resources while ensuring our paramedics have the medications they need,” Fire Chief Chad Augustin said.
The partnerships support the department’s expanded emergency medical services, including the whole-blood program, which is intended to give paramedics another treatment option for patients suffering severe blood loss.
