This week kicks off celebrations, educational events, and remembrances of Martin Luther King, Jr.

As we remember Dr. King, his speeches remind us of the role of love in our lives and in making lasting change. Here’s a list of local events in Pasadena honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy:

      – MLK Day of Service: A Day On, Not Off

      Saturday, January 18
      8:00 am – 12:00 pm

      Location
      Muir High School
      1905 N. Lincoln Ave.
      Pasadena, CA 91103

On the Saturday before the MLK Celebration (the official MLK Day of Service), it is our tradition to provide a local school with volunteers to help beautify the campus. Volunteers plant, clean up, and/or help with maintenance tasks. Afterwards, everyone enjoys lunch and entertainment from the students from the school.

      – Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance

      Sunday, January 19
      3:30 pm

      Location
      Metropolitan Baptist Church
      2283 N. Fair Oaks Ave.
      Altadena, CA 91001

      – MLK Holiday Celebration and Student Awards

      Monday, January 20
      8:00 am – 12:30 pm

      Location
      Robinson Park
      1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave.
      Pasadena, CA 91103

This culminating signature event begins with a continental breakfast and teach-in presented by PUSD administrators. For the highlight of the day, student winners from the MLK Essay and Visual Arts Contests are presented with awards, trophies, and cash prizes. City council representatives, PUSD officials, and community leaders  and volunteers congratulate the students. The celebration includes dance and musical presentations from a variety of local student groups and organizations. An activity booth is available for kids of all ages.
