Pasadena Councilmember Tyron Hampton announced on Friday, March 20, that small home kitchens, referred to as micro home kitchens, have been approved for legal retail food preparation by the Pasadena Economic Development and Technology Committee, which he chairs.

According to Hampton, the approval creates new opportunities for residents to operate their home kitchens as small businesses. He noted that many residents have previously purchased baked goods such as cookies and cakes from home-based sellers, despite those operations being unregulated and technically illegal.
The newly approved measure will establish a pilot program allowing home cooks to legally sell their food products, provided they comply with regulations set by the city’s health department.
Hampton said the initiative was driven in part by community input. He expressed appreciation for residents who brought attention to the issue and highlighted that similar programs have already been adopted in other cities.
The program offers a way for residents to earn additional income, particularly during a time of economic uncertainty.
Final approval of the measure will require a vote by the Pasadena City Council.
