Pasadena Central Library Retrofit Reinstalls Earthquake Sensors

As the Pasadena Central Library undergoes a major seismic retrofit, project officials are reinstalling earthquake sensors and taking steps to protect more than 75 trees during construction.

Project officials said Caltech specialists have identified locations where 25 earthquake sensors will be reinstalled after being temporarily removed during the project’s early demolition phase. Crews are relocating the devices away from active construction so they can continue collecting real-time data on structural movement, vibrations and other seismic activity during the retrofit.

At the same time, project officials are working with an arborist and the architectural team to safeguard the library’s mature tree canopy during construction. Before construction activity increases, crews are evaluating measures such as protective fencing, designated root protection zones, and wrapping trunks with boards or padding to help prevent damage.

The earthquake sensors and tree preservation measures will remain in place throughout construction as work continues to strengthen the nearly century-old library while preserving its historic landscape.
