The Pasadena Central Library’s Retrofit and Building Repairs Project has entered a significant new phase, with construction teams now erecting scaffolding and preparing for the delicate removal of the building’s signature Spanish‑style ceramic roof tiles.

Crews have spent recent days assembling scaffolding around the historic structure, a task that has required precise maneuvering around mature trees and other exterior obstacles. These limitations have influenced how closely the scaffolding can be positioned against the building, but workers continue to make steady progress while maintaining safety standards.
Once the scaffolding is fully in place, construction teams will begin removing the library’s distinctive red tiles one by one. Each tile will be carefully inventoried and transported to secure off‑site storage for the duration of the retrofit. The tiles will be returned to the roof once structural improvements are complete. Their temporary removal will allow crews to address roof leaks throughout the building and replace any tiles that have cracked or deteriorated over time.
Meanwhile, demolition work continues across the site. Workers are steadily removing concrete and excess materials as the project moves forward, marking another step toward restoring and strengthening one of Pasadena’s most recognizable civic landmarks.
