Pasadena Celebrates Earth Day With Goats, Green Living, and Community Fun

Residents of Pasadena are invited to celebrate sustainability, community, and creativity at this year’s Earth Day Festival, taking place Saturday, April 18, at Brookside Park.

Running from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm (with extended activities through 2:00 pm), the free, family-friendly event promises a mix of environmental education, hands-on activities, and an unusual but purposeful highlight: the release of more than 600 goats into the nearby Arroyo Seco.

Hosted by the City of Pasadena in partnership with One Arroyo Foundation, the festival marks a significant step in local wildfire prevention efforts. The goats will graze across roughly 100 acres, clearing dry vegetation and helping restore the natural landscape through an eco-friendly approach.

“This is a chance to celebrate the Arroyo while taking real action toward fire resilience,” organizers said.

A Festival with a Purpose

The event blends environmental awareness with interactive fun. Attendees can enjoy goat yoga (for an added fee), a petting zoo, arts and crafts, and educational booths led by city departments and community partners.

Among the participating organizations is Remainders Creative Reuse, offering hands-on art activities focused on sustainable and inclusive practices. Outdoor programming will also be led by Outward Bound Adventures, while Pasadena 100 will share information on advancing carbon-free electricity in the city.

City departments, including Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Transportation, Health, and Pasadena Water and Power, will host booths where residents can learn about sustainability programs, zero-emission infrastructure, and local resources.

Goats Take Center Stage

The official goat release is expected to draw significant attention. Visitors can meet the goat herder, learn about targeted grazing, and see firsthand how the animals contribute to reducing wildfire risk.

Children and families can also enjoy a goat petting zoo, while interactive demonstrations highlight how natural grazing supports ecosystem health.

Community Engagement and Climate Action

The festival also serves as a platform for civic engagement. Attendees can explore Pasadena’s current Climate Action Plan and provide input on future initiatives, connecting directly with Environmental Advisory Commissioners.

A free compost giveaway will help residents take sustainability efforts home, encouraging eco-friendly practices beyond the event.
