The fair featured presentations from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI), which shared recent data, real-life case examples, and key prevention strategies addressing common scams targeting seniors across Southern California.
“Scams and fraud have been circulating in our community for decades, but the frequency and tactics have only gotten worse in recent years,” said Assemblymember Fong. “That is why we hosted this event – to educate the public on how to stay vigilant and safe. I am grateful to our partner organizations for coming together to provide critical information to protect seniors. The more we know, the better we can protect ourselves and others.”
Attendees also visited resource booths and met with representatives from community partners including AARP, the Asian Youth Center, Garfield Health Center, Chinatown Service Center, the Los Angeles County Department of Aging and Disabilities, and the Contractors State License Board. These organizations offered informational materials, guidance on recognizing and avoiding scams, and referrals to additional support services.
Key Scam Prevention Tips Highlighted at the Event
- Never give out personal information over the phone to someone you don’t know.
- Be cautious of emergency calls from people claiming to be relatives; always verify their identity and consider using a family “safe word.”
- Avoid downloading apps or transferring money at the request of someone you meet online.
- Contact your bank or financial institution directly if something feels suspicious.
- Do not join random group chats or click on unfamiliar links sent via text or email.
Assemblymember Fong’s office emphasized that ongoing community education is crucial to combating evolving scam tactics and protecting seniors’ financial security.
