The walk up the switchback stairs was a thigh-burner to reach the elevated roof of the ArtCenter South Campus Building (950 S. Raymond Ave,) but the view was great and the winds were blowing.

A small but enthusiastic crowd had gathered to witness the rainbow flag raised to celebrate and acknowledge 2019 National Coming Out Day and San Gabriel Valley Pride.

The ceremony was preceded by remarks by a colorfully attired Aaron Bruce, Chief Diversity Officer, who saw the ceremony as a “message of peace and unity.” He was followed by graduate student Lorenzo Mendoza, who lamented the difficulties LBGQT people have in Mexico, but finished his remarks on a more upbeat note, saying that it was “a great day for people to celebrate who they are.”

Following these remarks, the Rainbow Flag was hitched below the American flag and both were lifted to applause. The flag will remain up all week.

A good time was had by all, the cupcakes with the rainbow frosting were fantastic!
