On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the South Pasadena City Council said goodbye to former Councilmember Jack Donovan, and it introduced two new elected members: Omari Ferguson and Sheila Rossi.

The meeting began with public comments from the City’s residents. The first speaker thanked the Council for its help with the “dubious” tree removal. The second speaker spoke to the Council about running the city from “a place of empathy” during uncertain times. The third and final speaker talked at length about the “major improvements” she has seen from the South Pasadena Police Department, Fire Department, and expressed concern about “accessibility” in the City, specifically when it comes to public events.
After brief staff introductions, Jack Donovan spoke about his time serving the City and how, having been elected in 2020, adjusting to the new COVID workplace proved a challenge that he eventually overcame with the help of his fellow Councilmembers and residents. He then introduced some of his family members who were in the audience. During Donovan’s remarks, California State Senator Sasha Pérez entered the room and took a seat at the very front row.
Closing out his statement, Donovan said, “it’s been a privilege” before receiving a short standing ovation. Pérez awarded Donovan a certificate of service, and they posed for photographs before the other Councilmembers offered words of thanks and farewells.
Omari Ferguson, wearing a blue suit and a stern look, stepped up to the podium on the far right side of the room. He raised his right hand and took the oath of office; he said a few words of thanks to those who voted for him, ending with a call to action.
Sheila Rossi, wearing a white suit, stepped up next. Pérez issued the oath of office, and Rossi followed up by speaking about her gratitude and the work that will be done in the coming years. “The work ahead is not easy,” Rossi said, “but it is necessary.”
Incumbent Councilmember Jon Primuth was sworn in, and Councilmember Janet Braun was elected as Mayor. The council then appointed Rossi to be sworn in as Mayor Pro Tem. For the second time that night, Rossi took to the podium to take the oath.
The new Councilmembers took their seats up at the front of the room. Shortly after, everyone in the room headed to the City Hall courtyard where they could eat cake, drink water, take pictures, and talk to the Councilmembers face to face.
