Looking for a place to cool off this summer? Look no further. The Pasadena City College pool is open to the public from now through August 2 (other than July 4).

      By Melissa Michelson

Recreational swimming is Monday through Thursday 1:14 -4:45 and Friday 11:30-4:30. Lap swimming is Monday through Thursday 11:45 to 7:00  and Friday 11:30 to 4:30, except Friday, July 5 when lap swimming will continue until 7:00.  Lap swimmers must be able to swim 50 yards unassisted.

The aquatic center can be accessed from the first floor of the W building, either north or south entrance. The closest parking lot is Lot 3 at Del Mar and Hill for $2 a day via a ticket dispenser, or there is street parking on neighboring Hill or Cordova.

Recreational swimming costs $3, and lap swimming costs $5. Everyone must pay to enter the pool area, whether swimming or not.  The W building locker rooms are available for changing but locks are not available.  One might want to put one’s clothing and other items in one’s gym bag and take that to the pool area.

      50-meter Olympic pool

The 50-meter Olympic pool offers swimmers one- and three-meter diving boards, but swimmers need to show swimming proficiency before being allowed on them. There is also a handicapped access ramp at the northern end and a four foot shallow area.

Be sure to wear plenty of waterproof sunscreen or plan on coming in the late afternoon when the pool is shaded.  PCC keeps the pool heated at 79.1-80.1 degrees, but it can get warmer with warmer summer temperatures.

      Kickboards and swimming lessons

Standard safety rules apply at the pool.  Kickboards are available on a first-come first-served basis. No flotation devices or toys are permitted.  Bring your own swim goggles.

During the summer, PCC offers four 2-week swimming lessons for $89 each. Each session is 40 minutes and take place every day Monday-Thursday for two weeks.  Teacher to student ratio is one instructor to four students for pre-schoolers and ranges up to one to eight for adults.

More information can be accessed at this link where there also is a link to a campus map.
