An officer was wounded and a suspected gunman was killed following a shooting near the Sierra Madre Villa Metro Station in Pasadena on Monday evening, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 7:30 pm near Sierra Madre Villa and the 210 Freeway, according to the Pasadena Police Department. Officers were dispatched to the station after reports of an altercation and discovered a person suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder, police spokesperson Susana Porras said.
While some officers provided first aid and requested paramedics for the victim, others attempted to approach a man believed to be connected to the shooting. Police Chief Gene Harris said the individual fled, prompting officers to pursue him toward Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Electronic Drive.
During the chase, gunfire was exchanged between at least one officer and the suspect. Both the officer and the suspect were struck.
The suspected gunman was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his identity.
The wounded officer was transported to Huntington Hospital and was reported to be conscious and speaking following the shooting. As of about 10:00 pm, the officer was undergoing surgery, Harris said. In a statement posted to social media, Harris said the department is “keeping our injured officer, his family, and all those affected by tonight’s violence in our thoughts,” and asked the community for patience as detectives work to determine exactly what occurred. The civilian who was shot prior to officers’ arrival was also hospitalized, though officials have not detailed the extent of either person’s injuries.
Police said they are not looking for additional suspects. However, officials expect the area around Sierra Madre Villa and Electronic to remain closed for an extended period as investigators process the scene.
The Pasadena Police Department is expected to release an update on the investigation Tuesday morning.
Authorities have not yet disclosed what led to the initial confrontation at the Metro station. The investigation remains ongoing.
