The Foothill Catalog Foundation and San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity marked a significant milestone today in the recovery efforts for survivors of the devastating Eaton Fire. Supervisor Kathryn Barger hosted a press conference on-site at a lot owned by Eaton Fire survivors, Kenneth and Carol Wood, where the first of 25 new homes is set to be built as part of this initiative.

The Foothill Catalog Foundation, known for its love of Altadena’s unique character, charm, and tight-knit community, has designed a series of pre-approved, practical architectural plans specifically tailored to help Altadena residents rebuild more quickly, affordably, and efficiently. These designs, made possible by the county’s innovative “standard plan program,” streamline the often-costly and time-consuming process of custom home designs, ensuring survivors can return to their homes faster.
The designs have been pre-approved by Los Angeles County’s Altadena One Stop Permitting Center, which aims to simplify permitting processes for fire survivors. With this approval, Habitat for Humanity will use the curated plans to help qualifying families, including the Wood family, who became the first to benefit from the new initiative.
“Today, we celebrated that the Wood family became the first!,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Effective recovery is about both speed and soul.”
Kenneth and Carol Wood, who lost their home in the fire, expressed their gratitude as they joined the community in celebrating the progress.
San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity has committed to constructing 25 homes for qualified Eaton Fire survivors. The program aims to provide a practical and affordable solution for families looking to rebuild their homes while minimizing the burden of complicated construction processes and costly designs.
The Wood family’s home is expected to be the first of many in what promises to be a brighter, more resilient future for Altadena. For more information about the program or to view the pre-approved architectural plans, visit foothillcatalog.org.
