Each year, June 1–7 is recognized as National CPR & AED Awareness Week, an important reminder that anyone can help save a life during a cardiac emergency.

In the spirit of the week, San Gabriel Fire Department encourages all residents to learn the basics of Hands-Only CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). These simple skills can make a critical difference in the first few moments after someone suddenly collapses. They’ve released the following guidelines for action.
A Focus on Fast Response
Fire officials stress that when a person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, every second counts. While emergencies can feel overwhelming, taking action right away significantly improves the chances of survival.
What To Do in a Cardiac Emergency
- Call 9‑1‑1: If possible, direct someone nearby to make the call so you can begin helping immediately.
- Start Hands‑Only CPR: Begin chest compressions without delay:
- Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest and interlock your fingers with the other hand.
- Keep your arms straight and use your upper body weight to push.
- Compress the chest about 2 inches deep at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
- A steady rhythm can be maintained by following the beat of the song “Stayin’ Alive.”
- Continue CPR until emergency responders arrive.
How to Use an AED
If an AED is available:
- Turn the device on.
- Follow the voice prompts.
- Apply the pads as directed.
The device provides step‑by‑step instructions, making it usable even for those with no medical training.
