Each year, June 1–7 is recognized as National CPR & AED Awareness Week, an important reminder that anyone can help save a life during a cardiac emergency.

      By Melanie Hooks

In the spirit of the week, San Gabriel Fire Department encourages all residents to learn the basics of Hands-Only CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). These simple skills can make a critical difference in the first few moments after someone suddenly collapses. They’ve released the following guidelines for action.

      A Focus on Fast Response

Fire officials stress that when a person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, every second counts. While emergencies can feel overwhelming, taking action right away significantly improves the chances of survival.

What To Do in a Cardiac Emergency

      • Call 9‑1‑1: If possible, direct someone nearby to make the call so you can begin helping immediately.
      • Start Hands‑Only CPR: Begin chest compressions without delay:
        • Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest and interlock your fingers with the other hand.
        • Keep your arms straight and use your upper body weight to push.
        • Compress the chest about 2 inches deep at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
        • A steady rhythm can be maintained by following the beat of the song “Stayin’ Alive.”
      • Continue CPR until emergency responders arrive.

      How to Use an AED

      If an AED is available:

      • Turn the device on.
      • Follow the voice prompts.
      • Apply the pads as directed.

The device provides step‑by‑step instructions, making it usable even for those with no medical training.

      Encouraging Community Preparedness

The San Gabriel Fire Department emphasizes that anyone can step in to help during a cardiac emergency. Residents interested in learning more or signing up for CPR training can visit redcross.org/cpr.
