Curious what a brass quintet can do with chamber music compared to a traditional string quartet? The Mt. Lowe Chamber Players are ready to delight audiences with everything from Bach to Bridgerton at a free concert on Sunday, March 15, at 3:00 pm.

      By Melanie Hooks

The concert will be held at (and co-sponsored by) Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1757 N. Lake Ave., Pasadena. Parking is free.

The Mt. Lowe Chamber Players maintain a flexible lineup and adventurous programming. This performance explores the history of brass music, showcasing the ensemble’s current brass quintet.

The program features early works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Giovanni Gabrieli performed on modern instruments, Russian salon music from the 1890s, selections associated with German Brass, and a leap into the 20th century and beyond with film and television music, some jazz-inspired.

The concert also highlights composers from the local Los Angeles music scene, including Jim McMillen (Bridgerton), Bill Mays (who accompanied Frank Sinatra), Fred Steiner (Perry Mason and Rocky and Bullwinkle), and Steve Huffsteter.

Performers from Altadena and neighboring communities include Chris Price and Cathy Ryan (trumpets), John Mason (horn), Dave Ryan (trombone), and P. Blake Cooper (tuba). Members perform regularly with ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony, and Long Beach Symphony.

The Mt. Lowe Chamber Players’ season is supported by the Altadena Library, Westminster Presbyterian Church, grants from the Altadena Rotary and Pasadena Community Foundation, and generous individual donors. All concerts are free.
