Mozart’s “Best Work” Returns to Pasadena in Free Mt. Lowe Chamber Players Concert

Still famous now, composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was no stranger to fame and the accompanying ego in his own lifetime. The Mt. Lowe Chamber Players could be simply honoring his wishes by performing his Piano Quintet with Winds on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 3:00 pm in Westminster Presbyterian Church’s soaring sanctuary.

      By Melanie Hooks

After completing the work in 1784, Mozart wrote to his father, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.” Audiences will have the chance to decide for themselves when the Altadena-based ensemble brings the piece to life.

The performance promises exceptional artistry. The musicians, who regularly appear with ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, LA Chamber Orchestra, LA Opera, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony, and Long Beach Symphony—will also expand their ranks for a second work on the program: Francis Poulenc’s rollicking Sextet for Piano and Winds (ca. 1932). Known for his irreverent wit and his determination to puncture the solemnity of classical tradition, Poulenc colors the piece with jazz, ragtime, contemporary love songs, and perhaps even a wink toward Mozart himself.

The concert is free and requires no reservations.

      Performers

      • Larry Kaplan (flute)
      • Jonathan Davis (oboe)
      • Michele Zukovsky (clarinet)
      • Phoebe Ray (bassoon)
      • John Mason (horn)
      • Antoinette Perry (piano)

More information is available at mtlowechamberplayers.com.

The season is funded by the Altadena Library, Westminster Presbyterian Church, grants from the Altadena Rotary and Pasadena Community Foundation, and generous donors. Mt. Lowe Chamber Players is a project of the Fulcrum Arts “Emerge Fiscal Sponsorship Program.”
