Residents in a Pasadena neighborhood were placed under a shelter-in-place alert Friday after a mountain lion was spotted near an apartment complex in a busy area of the city.

Authorities responded alongside wildlife officials. The animal reportedly remained in the area as personnel arrived to assess the situation.
Due to the area’s heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic, officials advised nearby residents and business owners to remain indoors. Some people in the immediate vicinity were also directed to evacuate while efforts continued to safely capture the animal.
The incident raised additional concerns because a nearby school was scheduled to hold a graduation ceremony Friday. Authorities monitored the situation closely to help ensure public safety as wildlife teams worked in the area.
Residents may have noticed news helicopters circling overhead as emergency responders and wildlife officials managed the developing situation.
As the response continued, two apartment buildings were evacuated as a precaution. Personnel from the Pasadena Police Department, Pasadena Fire Department and California Department of Fish and Wildlife worked together to safely contain the situation.
Officials later tranquilized the mountain lion, which then moved into nearby bushes. Wildlife officers were able to secure the animal without any reported injuries to the public. Authorities said the mountain lion will undergo a medical assessment before being released back into the wild.
