Mount Wilson Observatory’s Talks & Telescopes will feature Deborah Shapley, Granddaughter of Astronomer Harlow Shapley.

      By News Desk

The evening of July 22 on Mount Wilson will begin with a talk by Deborah Shapley at 5:30 pm in the Mount Wilson Observatory Auditorium. Shapley will share three stories of her grandfather Harlow Shapley’s boldness after his 1918 discovery of our place in the Milky Way here at Mount Wilson:

      • his determination to keep science accessible,
      • his fight for a more just political world, and
      • his pursuit of proof that we are not alone in this universe so full of stars.

Following the talk, guests will have an opportunity to observe through both the 60- and 100-inch telescopes — the two largest telescopes in the world available for public use. Additional stargazing around the grounds will be available from members of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society. Food will be available for purchase from a food truck, or bring your own picnic!

      Important Notes from the Observatory

      • The road to Mount Wilson Observatory is open. The signs that say the road is closed are referring to a section of the 2 / Angeles Crest that is after the turn off to the Observatory.
      • The Cosmic Café will be open until 5:00 pm.
      • A free shuttle service is available to and from the main parking lot for anyone who might need it. It runs approximately every 20 minutes.
      • The gate from the main road will close shortly after the talk begins at 5:30 pm; latecomers won’t be able to enter. Please allow yourself an extra few minutes.
      • There are no gas stations on the mountain; the closest is 20 miles away in La Cañada.
      • There is no reliable cell phone reception once you start up Angeles Crest Hwy, or on the Observatory’s grounds.

Come enjoy an inspiring night on the mountain! To purchase tickets, click here.
