Composer, performer, and educator, Morten Lauridsen received the National Medal of Arts for his contributions to American choral composition in 2007 and was named an American Choral Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2006. He taught classes at USC’s Thornton School of Music for over 50 years. To celebrate his 80th birthday, the Donald Brinegar Singers and the Jet Propulsion Lab Chorus will perform ten of Lauridsen’s compositions.
The Donald Brinegar Singers and the JPL Chorus are a combined community choral ensemble that is part of the Pasadena Symphony and POPS organization, directed by Donald Brinegar, who is Professor Emeritus of Music at Pasadena City College. Brinegar has published five books on Choral Music.
The program will include selections from Mid-Winter Songs (with poetry by Robert Graves), Madrigali, Chansons Des Roses, Lux Aeterna, Nocturnes and Prayer (Dana Giola’s Elegy for his son). These and other works have been featured regularly in concert by distinguished vocalists and ensembles around the world at venues such as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Vatican, Sydney Opera House, and Westminster Abbey.
Lauridsen has spent his lifetime listening in deep silence to the ‘inner song’, bringing forth choral works of radiant beauty for the world to hear and sing.
