The vibrant, large-letter postcard-style mural is the latest work from San Gabriel Valley-based artist duo Victor Ving and Lisa Beggs, known nationally as Greetings Tour. With over 70 murals across 30 states, the pair are credited with originating the iconic mural style that turns city names into colorful, culturally rich community emblems.
This latest installment holds special significance for both the artists and the city. Ving, a Chinese-American artist with family roots in Monterey Park, collaborated closely with local creatives to ensure the mural reflects the city’s diverse cultural identity. The timing of the unveiling coincides with Monterey Park’s 109th birthday and AAPI Heritage Month, events that align with the mural’s deep Chinese and Japanese themes.
“My parents live here in Monterey Park, and we now have multiple generations of family in the surrounding area. There’s something really rewarding about contributing to a city that’s become part of our story,” said Ving.
The mural also features collaborations with prominent local artists, including street artist “Vyal” Reyes, who contributed Cinco de Mayo and Chicano heritage imagery to the “N” and “T” letters, and Indigenous Tongva artist River Garza, who created a powerful tribute to the region’s first people in the “A.” Additional contributors—Dominic Corry, Ernie Nazarian, David Wang, and Abner Ramos—helped bring the project to life and document the creative process.
Community engagement played a key role in the mural’s development, with final imagery chosen through a public vote, making this piece a true reflection of Monterey Park’s collective identity.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by the City of Monterey Park, marked not just the unveiling of a mural, but the celebration of a shared cultural legacy that continues to grow.
