For Monterey Park and Alhambra, the loss hits close to home. Mackie was born in Monterey Park on March 24, 1939, and spent part of his early life in the area before later living with his grandparents in Alhambra. He would go on to build an iconic career rooted in the dream he had from the start: becoming a famous designer.
Mackie’s team announced his death on Instagram Monday, Sept. 14, saying he lived his 87 years fully and spent his life doing exactly what he wanted to do. His signature beaded and embellished designs became instantly recognizable and helped define some of the most memorable looks in entertainment.
The Academy Award-nominated designer was also one of television’s most celebrated costume artists, earning 32 Emmy nominations and winning nine times. He studied at Pasadena City College and later transferred to the Chouinard Art Institute, though he left after one year.
For local communities tied to his early life, Mackie’s death marks the passing of a hometown talent whose influence stretched far beyond the San Gabriel Valley.
