Female composers from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and early Baroque eras will be celebrated this weekend as Jouyssance Early Music Ensemble presents MadriGALS, a two-concert event dedicated to reviving works by women whose music has largely been absent from modern performance.

The Los Angeles-based early music ensemble is partnering with L.A. Camerata to showcase compositions by women and bring audiences music that, in some cases, has not been heard for centuries.
The first performance will take place on Saturday, June 13, at 8:00 pm at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, located at 6700 W. 83rd St. in Westchester.
A second performance will follow on Sunday, June 14, at 4:00 pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 122 S. California Ave. in Monrovia, providing a convenient option for San Gabriel Valley residents.
Tickets are available online and are priced at $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors, and $10 for students with valid identification.
Jouyssance Early Music Ensemble is dedicated to revitalizing music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque periods. Under the artistic direction of Dr. Nicole Baker, the ensemble has established itself as one of Southern California’s premier vocal groups and is the only regularly performing vocal ensemble in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to music composed before 1650. The group has released three recordings: Jouyssance Early Music Ensemble, A Tour of Christmases Past, and Cantiga: An Early Music Tour of Iberia.
Joining the program is L.A. Camerata, an ensemble focused on telling the stories of early modern women through performance. Inspired by Renaissance-era camerati, philosophical societies that explored aesthetics in art and society, the group combines music and drama to revive historical voices on stage. L.A. Camerata has appeared multiple times at the Berkeley Early Music Fringe Festival, was selected for Early Music America’s 2020 Emerging Artists Showcase, and won a 2019 Beverly Hills National Auditions ensemble award.
Together, the two ensembles aim to shine a spotlight on the contributions of women composers and reintroduce audiences to a rich musical legacy spanning centuries.
